Artist's Statement

Born and raised in East Tennessee, I have been involved in visual art, music, and other creative outlets my entire life. Now retired from a thirty-year career teaching art, I have been able to re-engage the artistic pursuits that colored my youth; I play in a classic rock cover band, and I am currently writing a novel. My main passion, though, lies in visual expressions.

As I returned to my personal creative path, I discovered some things about myself. Firstly, the freshness with which my students had approached their art, the pure joy of creating that I have admired in them, had slipped from my own grasp. I was well-versed in the styles, techniques, and history of art, but these strengths had also weakened my ability to see the world with fresh eyes.

Secondly, I was recently diagnosed with ADHD, a condition that I now realize has been with me my whole life. I am in my fifties, and the Information and resources available now to treat this condition were not there when I was growing up. so, I sought help and started medications for ADHD, as well as my issues with anxiety and depression, also long-time companions. These medications worked wonders, and I enjoyed a year or so of organized and creative thoughts before the shortage of the drugs' ingredients left me once again in a fog.

I have chosen to include this information in my bio because I am sure that I am not alone in this struggle. My purpose for this website is partially to make a modest living from my work, but I also hope to connect with and help encourage other artists who find themselves in similar circumstances.

My webpage includes selected works I have created in the past that I feel reflect moments of creative clarity. For the most part, though, I hope to showcase new approaches and breakthroughs that I experience as I venture forth into new chapters of my own story; new ways of seeing, thinking, and communicating in an ever=evolving world.
